Cannes Film Festival 2013: Carey, Cara and More Hit the Red Carpet for The Great Gatsby

When I woke up this morning, I knew it was going to be a good day, Primpers. And wouldn’t you know it, I turned up at work, flicked on my computer and saw the first red carpet line-up direct from the Cannes Film Festival.

Personally I couldn’t think of a better film to show at the opening night than The Great Gatsby. The star-studded cast aside (but only temporarily), Nicole Kidman, who is a member of the jury (Diane Kruger had this role last year) made a cameo, as did Cara Delvingne, who stole the show, resplendent in a floor-length lace gown and a glossy red lip to boot.

I’m getting ahead of myself, Primpers. Pull up a chair and take a virtual stroll down the red carpet with me …

Carey Mulligan

After feeling a little underwhelmed by her somewhat subdued world premiere beauty look, Carey, alongside co-star Leo*, certainly pulled out the stops for Cannes. The starlet grew out her pixie crop for her role in Gatsby, and we love how she styled her now collarbone-grazing hair into silky soft and natural style. It set an understated backdrop for her creamy, satin-like skin, letting her main feature, that lacquered red pout, to take centre stage. Taking cue from the 1920s era, Carey is sporting the perfect Cupid’s bow mouth, perfectly applied, albeit in a slightly brighter red than the rich berry stains which dominated the era. For a similar look, try Giorgio Armani Lip Maestro Intense Velvet Lip Color in 400, $49, from selected departmed stores.

Nicole Kidman

I was eager to see if Nicole Kidman could fill Diane Kruger’s (sky-high) fashionable heels at Cannes, and so far I like what I’ve spotted. Reminiscent of the up-and-away hair we spotted on the A/W ’13 catwalks, this kind of style isn’t for anyone who likes to hide away – like behind a fringe, for example. You need to ensure that your makeup is blended beautifully along your hairline and your ears because, as you can see, everything is on show. Snaps for that pretty-as-a-picture pink pout and the electric blue eyeshadow smudged subtly along the lower lash line. We knew Heidi Klum was on to something last week.

Cara Delevingne

Cara, Cara, Cara. She stepped out at Cannes with her new lion ink proudly on display, coordinating her glossy red tips to her lips. Never one to play by the beauty rules, she worked some serious eye makeup, too, with a black and charcoal smoky shadows paired with thick, black curled lashes. Like Carey, though, it was her lips that made the biggest impact, the lush and juicy colour providing a striking contrast to her creamy skin and glittering jewels. Nail note: Try Max Factor Glossfinity in Cerise, $11.05, from Priceline.

Lana Del Rey

Taking cue from the Gatsby era, Lana Del Rey played a 1920s beauty for the evening, complete with ringlets and a softly curled finger wave through her fringe. Of course, being Lana, she put a modern twist on her look, nixing a berry pout for a matte, toffee-coloured hue. Her eyeliner, too, had an almost graphic, Egyptian-esque finish, extending her wing out to meet her eyebrow with a hint of richly pigmented gold shadow (M.A.C Cosmetics Pigment in Golden Lemon, $39, would work a treat) blended over her lid. It all makes sense, really, considering it was during the 1920s that King Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered and the makeup had traditionally followed suit.

Isla Fisher

Is it just me, or does Isla Fisher get better with age? Like her world premiere beauty look, she oozed glamour, with loosely tonged waves, her skin creamy and flawless with a hint of bronzer which warmed up her skin beautifully. Now while I’m not so much of a fan of neutral coloured lips, I will say I’m rather loving this high-shine hue on Isla – paired with her hair and black full lashes, I feel like nothing else (other than perhaps red) would have worked. For a similar look, try L’Oréal Paris Shine Caresse in Lolita, $21.95, from Priceline – it’s a sightly softer, yet still beautiful hue that would wear just as well.

Tell me Primpers, who was your favourite celebrity beauty here?

Loving all the red lips? Or do you prefer something a little more neutral, like Lana and Isla?

What do you think of Nicole’s statement-making ‘do?

*Oh, and I wasn’t going to provide any beauty info on Leo. He’s just there for your Thursday viewing pleasure.
